Recently one of my son's favorite TV stations conducted a survey of children. They asked kids which superpower they would rather have: the ability to fly or to be invisible?
To me it seemed to be a no-brainer--to fly most definitely!
First of all, I think the ability to fly offers a lot more opportunity for fun, adventure, and freedom. Just think about being able to go anywhere, anytime you want, without worrying about traffic, road conditions, or gas money!
While being invisible offers a range of opportunities as well it just seems so sneaky to me that I feel uncomfortable even thinking about it.
My son agreed with me. He thought flying would be a lot more fun. No surpise there as he is a physical child who enjoys being on the go.
Then I really started to think about the question. What does our choice say about us? I think I would really want to know why a child would choose invisibility over flying. I would fear that a child who chose that option either already felt invisible or wished they were. I would worry about their self-esteem and security in social interactions.
Of course, on the other hand, there are certain practical considerations. There are a number of instances where invisibility could serve many purposes for good on a small or large scale.
Apparently this question has been around for some time. A public radio station did a program on superheroes some time ago and took a survey asking which power their audience would prefer, the power to fly or to be invisible.
Men overall, voted that they wanted to fly and women that they wanted to be invisible. Why? So that the men could fly their kids to school and soccer instead of fighting traffic and women wanted to be invisible so that they could sit in on conversations and hear what was being said about them. No one wanted to use the super power to help others.
I find that survey even more disappointing than the one for kids. But not surprising. I am not a cynical person (except when it comes to my students' excuses for not doing their homework) in general but more often when I hear some act of courageous good I am surprised rather than affirmed.
So while this could certainly appear to be a superficial question, something like the Barbara Walter's "If you could be an animal, what would you be" type, but I think it could lead to a much deeper discussion. What do you think?

Laziness
Our first characteristic is laziness. Let’s face it. Most people are just downright lazy. Given a choice they would prefer to do something easy over something that was hard. We all would, right?
The reason this is such an important personality characteristic is because laziness can also be a powerful motivator to succeed. Since laziness is essentially a desire to get the most done, in the shortest period of time, being lazy can actually be a good thing!
If you think about it, all human progress and technological advancement, has come from a desire to get things done easier and quicker than the traditional way of doing them. Why walk, when you can ride a bike? Why bike, when you can drive? Hell, why drive when you can fly!
The point is, whilst laziness certainly can lead to failure, it can also lead to success. However it’s a slippery slope, so don’t get too lazy, or you might find yourself unable to pay the rent!
Greed
If I were to ask you what you would prefer, more money or less money, which would your prefer? Hmmm, that’s a hard one. Let me think about that for a minute…Not! Of course, given a choice people will always choose more over less, that’s obvious.
So how does greed effect success or failure? Well greed, like laziness can also be a powerful motivator to succeed, or it can lead to failure. Like laziness, it’s a slippery slope.
Greed, or the desire for more, can motivate you to work hard, stay up late and generally try your utmost hardest to get that new phone, car, house etc… you always wanted. So the greed characteristic if harnessed correctly, can be an extremely powerful force to have on your side.
However the trouble with greed is that you are never satisfied with what you have. And so greedy people always want more. What happens to greedy people? That’s right, they get fat! Too much greed can cause a person to buy everything they see or desire, and so greed can be a very quick way to loose all your money!
Ambition
Do you enter a race to win, or to loose? Obviously winning is what all people want to do in life, no one likes coming in 2nd place, because deep down we are all ambitious.
Ambition is a characteristic that all successful people have. It is a desire to rise to the top and beat a competitor. However there are 2 types of ambition. The first is ambition for short term gain, for example winning a football game. The second type of ambition is for long term gain, for example winning the football championship.
Unfortunately most people tend to pursue short term ambitions, but success is not built upon short term gain. In order to be truly successful you need to pursue longer term gains, and this is what really counts.
With the internet came a new concept, which is referred to as streaming video. This seems like a very general term, and many people may not be aware of what the term actually means. When used on the internet, “streaming” means that a product is being sent from one place to another on a time frame. Streaming video is a video clip or movie that is being sent over real time from one place to another. This is a movie that is being constantly supplied to the individuals requesting the video. The method of the material being transferred is known as streaming, and this is not the medium that is being used. For example, there is streaming video and streaming audio. Audio and video are the mediums that are being used in those forms, but the streaming concept refers to the way that the product is being sent from one place to another over the internet or through another method. Some people do not realize that streaming media was around before the internet, but that it was not referred to as such. Since there are no so many ways in which people can receive information, including videos, many people are able to understand that there needs to be a distinction between styles of sending.
Streaming video can also be used in order to describe a television channel. In this way, an individual can acknowledge that while streaming video is not just used on the computer this is a very popular example. Still, it is used in various other methods around the home. In some homes, there are security cameras which will stream the video from one part of the home to another area in the home. Streaming does not have anything to do with the distance over which the video will travel. Rather, this merely refers to the manner in which the information gets transferred between locations. The same process can be applied to businesses and offices which is used in the home. Some alarm companies or security companies will actually allow owners to sign in on the internet from a remote location in order to view the security feeds on the cameras that are placed in the individual owner’s place of business. Streaming video is important when it comes to entertainment, such as with the television or on the internet, but it is also practical in a number of ways when it comes to security for businesses. Whether an individual wants to watch a movie on the television or check on the status of their store while they are home, streaming video can help these individuals to accomplish their goals and meet their desires. Sometimes streaming video will cost money and in order cases it will not cost the individual anything. It all depends on what is being streamed and where this is taking place. Many online sources do not charge for streaming video, but in most cases security companies and also the cable company will charge for the streaming videos that the individuals are able to enjoy.
